This Saturday SAT Prep class is a collaboration between Say Yes to Education and 100 Black Men of Syracuse Inc. Students taking this FREE course will be offered proctored practice tests, academic instruction, test-taking strategies and tutoring for the core competencies measured on the SAT. In addition, students who elect to take SAT Subject Test (s) will be offered additional support to master the content area.
There are 2 sessions to choose from. Attendance at all Saturdays in your chosen session is highly encouraged but should you have to miss a class, there is an online component where the class can be made up. A binder with notebook paper, pen/pencils, and SAT Test books will be provided.
All classes are held at the Say Yes Office, 109 Otisco Street on the 2nd floor, from 9 AM - 1 PM. Doors open at 8:45 AM.

Lawrence Williams, SCSD Mentor Coordinator will kick off a month-long Black History Celebration with a keynote presentation to Frazer staff, students and families, followed by presentations from various community leaders throughout the month of February. An 8th grade field trip to OCC to hear Mark D. Muhammad, minister of the Nation of Islam and an adjunct professor at OCC, will round out the month on February 29th.

Join us for the 27th Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Community Event, "A Living Legacy: The Fierce Urgency of Now" hosted by Syracuse University and Community Organizations. The day will be a celebration of arts, culture and education through a variety of workshops, speakers, presentations and performances provided by community organizations.
Don. C. Sawyer III, a doctoral candidate and instructor of sociology in the SU Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs, will be the keynote speaker.
SCSD students from 15 elementary and K-8 schools will be honored for making a positive difference in the lives of others in their schools and who exemplify the teachings of Dr. King. Those students are:

La Casita will host "Seymourofus Cross-generational Conversation," a community discussion led by Seymour School third-graders on issues of cultural memory, spaces of belonging and active participation in Syracuse. From 2:30-4 p.m., community conversation will take place about places of belonging and the future for young people. This is also open to the public.
The discussion is part of La Casita's series "Community Conversations: Spaces of Belonging & Civic Participation."

Seymourofus is a whole-school exploratory learning initiative that places emphasis on creativity, communication, critical thinking and collaboration skills. Community teaching artists, school personnel, students and families work together to integrate instruction with relevant learning and school improvement planning.
The La Casita Cultural Center at the Lincoln Building, 109 Otisco St., in downtown Syracuse, is the only Latino/a cultural center in the region, and is administered by The College of Arts and Sciences for the campus community.
La Casita’s mission is to serve as the bridge between the Latina/o communities of Syracuse and Central New York and Syracuse University’s faculty, students and staff. By offering the space and resources necessary for the development of collaborative, ongoing projects, La Casita hopes to enhance local communities’ capacity for social change and civic participation in the region.

Television, film and stage actor—and now author—Taye Diggs, a drama alumnus of Syracuse University’s College of Visual and Performing Arts (VPA), along with illustration alumnus Shane W. Evans will join the Syracuse community in promoting literacy, education and just being yourself.
As collaborators for the children’s book “Chocolate Me!” (Feiwel & Friends, 2011), Diggs and Evans will host a book signing, reading and Q-and-A for Syracuse children at the Greater Evangelical Church (4325 S. Salina St., Syracuse) at 2 p.m. The event is open to the public and is sponsored by Say Yes to Education, VPA, SU’s Office of Alumni Relations, the Interdenominational Ministerial Alliance (IMA) and the Syracuse City School District (SCSD). Participating in the event will be Say Yes to Education Executive Director Rachael Gazdick,IMA President Kenneth Reed and community faith-based leaders.
“Chocolate Me,” which Diggs wrote and Evans illustrated, carries an important message for children who may feel a little different from their peers. “Chocolate Me!”encourages kids to “appreciate their differences and celebrate them with a healthy sense of self-esteem.”
At the event, Diggs will read “Chocolate Me!” and Evans will accompany on the guitar.
