Ten Dollars and a Dream
Last month in her State of the City address, freshly minted Mayor Stephanie Miner displayed a self-deprecating sense of humor that many of us hadn’t seen before. I am not tall, said the mayor. “I did not run for this office on the grounds that Syracuse needed a tall mayor and, thankfully, a majority of the voters agreed with me.” As far back as we can tell, no mayor of Syracuse has ever admitted to being short. Since all 52 of her predecessors were male it is also highly likely that none of them stopped to ask for directions either. Read More...

Where do all those Syracuse parks' flowers come from?
Spring is here...

At the city greenhouse.

“Things are just starting to pop,” according to Jim Cowburn, the team leader at the greenhouse. Jim’s the man responsible for turning our city into one big bouquet of flowers, once the season turns. Spring officially arrives March 20, more than a month away.

The pupils were in the charge of Jessica Earley, who is program coordinator of the Roberts Say Yes to Education program. Tom Zaborsky, Roberts science teacher, was there, too.

Syracuse school plan could revitalize city
What if any Rochester high school graduate (regardless of family income) could go to any state college tuition-free, or to any Rochester-area private university? How would that change the culture of city schools? Would it reinvigorate city neighborhoods, retaining or drawing back middle-class families who might otherwise move to the suburbs? Would free college drive the graduation rate from 50 percent to 80 percent or higher? Read More...

Saying Yes!
By Amy Speach

One sunny day just after school started in September, Jessica Early sat with elementary kids in the lunchroom at the Roberts School in Syracuse, inviting their ideas for interesting and fun after-school programs. Early, a program coordinator for Say Yes to Education—a national initiative aimed at improving student achievement in city schools—was bombarded with imaginative suggestions ranging from science experiments to cooking classes. Later that week, in another part of town, Say Yes site director Asomgyee Pamoja met

Renew the Promise: Syracuse's new mayor looks forward to a 'thrilling ride'
By Stephanie Miner
Mayor of Syracuse

On Election Night, as I stood on the podium to declare victory, I was suddenly transported to my Upstate New York childhood. For me, one of the best parts of growing up in Central New York was sledding down a steep hill after a fresh snowfall — the thrill of the ride that was also scary and tested your courage.
